Exploring Cabo |
|
Take a
drive
|
When visiting the Los Cabos
area, keep in mind that Cabo San Lucas is not the only area that has
attractions. You will find some great sights and activities in Los
Cabos, Todos Santos and the La Paz area.
Start in Cabo San Lucas and
head out on Hwy 1 northbound towards Todos Santos. Along
this path you will find the following sites:
|
|
El Migriño
|
El Migriño has some
beautiful views. It is a turtle
sanctuary and you can often see the turtles just hanging out on the beach
basking in the warm sun. If you're lucky you will see the newborns
being helped by the mother as they make their way from the beach to the
safety of the sea.
|
|
Pescadero
|
Around KM 60 you will find
the town of Pescadero. This little town has some beautiful beaches,
but be careful as these are not swimming beaches, due to the rough surf
and strong currents. When you get to km 67, pull over, take the surf
board of the roof of your bug and and indulge yourself in some tasty
waves. You'll also find a trailer park there for you campers.
|
|
Todos Santos
|
Another 5 km and you arrive
at Todos Santos. This is a artist colony from all parts of the
world. This peaceful town offers full services, fantastic beaches and
protected bays. For you shoppers, keep an eye out for the small arts and
crafts market. You'll also find some excellent restaurants in town.
|
|
Hotel California
|
Before you leave Todos
Santos, be sure to swing by the Hotel California. Yes, the same one that
inspired Eagles in their famous song, so they say.
|
|
La Paz
|
Another 40 minutes and you
get to a fork in the road. Take a left for La Paz (or continue for
San Jose). The city of La Paz rates among the most beautiful cities
in the world and also happens to be the state capital of Baja Sur.
While in La Paz you should also check out the beautiful cathedral,
fantastic seafood, some rock formations that are a geological wonder,
called 'Balandra', and the unspoiled and secluded bay of
'Pichilingue'.
|
|
El Triunfo
|
As you continue straight
ahead from La Paz (21 km), you will enter El Triunfo, which is known for
having the largest copper mine in the Baja Peninsula.
Continue on and you arrive in Los Barriles, and another 21 km and
you hit the town of Buenavista. Both of these towns are
resort towns with first class restaurants and well run fishing
fleets. Another half hour and you arrive at the monument
of the Tropica de Cancer.
|
|
Santiago Zoo
|
The only zoo in the area will
be found a few minutes down the road in Santiago.
|
|
San Jose del Cabo
|
Once you pass the
airport you will arrive in the city of San Jose del Cabo. This city has
plethora of services including first class hotels and resorts,
restaurants, bars, designer clothing, shopping, jewelry
shops and nightclubs. Very important to the area is a tile mural
called the Mission of San Jose, built by Spanish Jesuit
missionaries and the Pericue natives in 1730. You will also find an
estuary with an underwater river and palm forest, home to thousands of
tropical birds for you bird watchers.
Surfers: As you leave San Jose, keep an
eye out for several nice surf breaks on the edge of town.
|
|
Tourist Corridor
|
Once you pass south from San
Jose, you will be on the Tourist Corridor, which is a 29 mile stretch of
lovely beaches, coves and bays. In this area you will also find
world-class resorts and championship golf courses. As you get closer
to San Lucas, you will see Medano Beach.
|
|
Médano Beach
|
This is the famous swimming
beach on the San Lucas shore, playground for the rich and shameless.
Toward the end of Médano Beach, just before San Lucas, you will find a
series of fun beach bars. These include "The Office" and
Billygan's Island, where it always seems to
be happy hour. You will also find a host of water activities such as
wave-runners, catamarans, parasailing,
snorkeling and scuba diving tours and other fun activities.

|
|
Cabo San Lucas
|
Cabo San Lucas is the most
famous of the Cabo towns and here you will find a large tourist district
and port. Many famous bars and clubs line the streets of San Lucas,
such as the famous Cabo Wabo club, owned by Sammy Hagar, where he
makes surprise appearances from time to time. Another fun place that
really gets hopping is Squid Roe. You will also find a wealth
of fine seafood and Mexican cuisines
throughout San Lucas.
|
|
ATVs
|
A popular activity in Cabo
San Lucas is All Terrain Vehicle riding (ATVs). Tours last 4 hours
and you ride through a desert area that ends up at the old lighthouse on
the beach on the Pacific side. Large dunes challenge your skills as you
attempt to blast your vehicle up the steep walls of sand to
make the top. These vehicles will accommodate single or double
riders. Most of the hotels in the Médano Beach area have ATV
signups that depart from various locations in town.

View from the
Lighthouse.
Enjoy your trip!
